K9 Program

The Brown Deer Police Department's K9 Unit consists of two canine teams, K9 Beny and his handler Sergeant Olsen, and K9 Haber and his handler Officer Lesnik.

K9 Beny5

K9 Beny is partnered with his handler, Sergeant Lea Olsen. Beny is a German Shepherd, born in June 2018 in Hungary. Beny is trained in narcotics detection, apprehension and handler protection, tracking, and building and article searches. Beny and Sergeant Olsen received their training from Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania, and began patrol in April of 2020.

K9 Haber is partnered with his handler, Officer Michael Lesnik. Haber is a three-year-old Labrador Retriever, from Poland. He is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and article searches. Officer Lesnik and K9 Haber received their training from Highland K9 in North Carolina and have been working together since 2019.

Training

Both teams train on a regular basis to ensure proficiency, including a full day of training once a month with other K-9 teams from the Metro Milwaukee area.

Funding & Donations

K9 Beny and K9 Haber’s food is donated from The Feed Bag Pet Supply and their veterinarian services are provided by the Brown Deer Animal Hospital. In December of 2020, the K-9 Unit received a generous $2000 grant from the Emma Loves Dogs Foundation to purchase new bite equipment. Many other donors have made the sustained operation of this K9 Unit possible.
